An ordinary man's question on lord shiva.

what does Om Namasivaya stand for?

Shiva stands for the true inner self, when we say Om Namasivaya, it means that i surrender to my true inner self, it the true inner self found in children, that innocence without any evil motivations or thoughts, it is that inner self which needs nothing from the outside world to be happy.

what does lord Shiva destroy?

lord Shiva destroys your past, he destroys the karma and attachment that is the cause for all the suffering in the world. one who worships Shiva fears none, after all what is there to fear once when we realize that "that which is truth cannot be destroyed nor have to be feared" - bhagavat gita

Isn't the god of destruction supposed to be feared?

Shiva is the lord of destruction, but he is the most lovable person for his devotees. for most of the gods there are lots of restrictions that one has to follow, but for Shiva there are no restrictions, one can worship Shiva all the time, for intense Shiva devotees, there is nothing called impure, from food to feces lord manifests in everything. there is nothing called impurity at atomic level. impurity was a rule build to reduce chance of infections by preventing contact with few things.

Is Shiva belonging to Hinduism?

first it is not exactly right to call Hinduism as a religion. Hinduism is a collection of ideas, it never says that god does not exist in other religion, it never says that one must convert his religion to worship Hindu gods, Hinduism has always tried to coexist and never to displace any religion. yogas are a part of Hinduism, it is now taught as subject in almost entire globe.
